The Berchtesgaden National Park is the only German national park in the Alps. Here, a mountain wilderness rich in species has been preserved over a large area and has been strictly protected since 1978. In the protected area, the forces of nature are allowed to work without human intervention: so that we can be enchanted and in order to preserve the diversity of life for the future - in keeping with the motto "Nature, let nature be nature".
But the area of the national park is also a cultural area: For many centuries, the alpine farmers from the surrounding valleys have driven their cattle into the area for summer grazing. This is how the alpine pastures came into being and how they have developed into a valuable cultural landscape with a great diversity of species. Their preservation is also an important task of the national park.
