A popular starting point for hikes into the wild Wimbach Valley is the Wimbachbrücke parking lot. If you would like to find out more about the Wimbach Valley, its geological features and the animals and plants living there before your hike, the Wimbachbrücke National Park Information Center is the place to go. The information center is not staffed, admission is free.
Daily from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm (May to October).
Closed during the winter months.
The imposing landscape around the Watzmann and Hochkalter mountains is the result of a long geological history of formation and various processes. What traces and evidence of this can we find in the national park? The geological profile at the information point shows which rock formations make up the protected area and how they relate to each other. Does the older rock always lie beneath the younger rock? Where are there fault zones that change the sequence? And what does this mean for soil development and species composition above the rock? In certain places, geologists can see what happened millions of years ago, for example in the Wimbach Gorge. At the model in the exhibition or in the real gorge (entrance to the valley, subject to charge) you can take a look at the geological history of the earth. On your hike through the Wimbach Valley, you can experience what happens today to rocks that were once formed on the seabed of the primordial ocean - geology live.
