Young generations are becoming increasingly alienated from nature. To counteract this trend, the alpine-wide Interreg project YOUrALPS was launched. Through creative actions, young people were encouraged to actively participate in shaping their future in the Alps and sensitized to the Alps as a habitat. The innovative "Alpine School Model" was also created in the course of the project.
Berchtesgaden National Park and Berchtesgaden High School, together with thirteen other pilot regions from five Alpine countries, developed new ideas for implementing education for sustainable development in the Alps, successfully put them into practice and finally evaluated them.
In 2020, Berchtesgaden High School was certified as Germany's first "Alpine School" for its commitment. The "Alpine School Model" enriches teaching through innovative and participatory approaches, enables outdoor education and promotes young people's relationship with nature and their alpine habitats.
